2022 Railing project

We went small this past winter on the projects. There was supposed to be another small project (replacing patio doors), but certain life events got in the way, so that is on hold.

For this project we had a railing in the living room that looked down into the foyer. Besides being dated in looks, it was also a bit rickety. I didn’t keep any furniture or anything up against it, but always worried about whether the dogs might get to playing a bit too hard too close; they would be able to break through the railing, no doubt.

February 2012

We also have lived in the house for ten years without a hand-rail up the stairs from foyer to living room and from living room up to the bedroom level. The posts at the base/top of the stairs were in bad shape and we had taken them out years ago.

This is a shot after taking that railing down:

I desperately want to replace the flooring in the living/dining room, but we aren’t ready to tackle that yet. The new railing will have red oak base and top rail with metal spindles, and my husband had to drill every hole, top and bottom into the wood. That took some math to figure out how many rails we’d need, spaced how far apart per code, then measure out the spots to drill the holes.

We had all the hand-rail pieces measured, cut and dry-fitted, then all wood got stained prior to installing.

There wasn’t a lot to talk about on the project; it was all pretty simple. As with just about every project we undertake in this “fixer-upper”, we have some trim pieces to add, and other adjoining areas that need work, but most won’t happen until we’re ready to tackle the full flooring replacement.

One project one season at a time, all while maintaining everything else! Life on the previously-foreclosed-upon mini-farm! Stay tuned; there’s always more to come.
